You can use it as your complete genealogy application and manage your entire database over a web interface or you can upload a simple GedCom-file from your pc-application and let JGen do all of the web-presentation work for you!
How does it work?
First you need a website that uses the Joomla! content management system. For those of you who don't know Joomla!: Joomla is a programm you install on your website and that takes care of all the layout and functionality of your website. All you have to do is enter the contents. So no html-programming anymore! If you like a different lay-out, just select another template and your entire website changes immediately. Joomla comes with a lot of built in functionality like menus, polls, mail-forms etc but you can add almost any other functionality you want. You want to add a forum? Just install a freeware forum component and you have the functionality of a forum!
But what if you want your website to show your family tree and information about your ancestors? You simply install JGen! JGen is a ready-to-install component for Joomla! that adds all the functionality you want:
- list of all the individuals
- lots of information per individual
- possibility to add images, documents, sources etc.
- data can be managed through the admin interface
- possibility to export data through a GedCom interface
- possibiliy to import data from other programms through a GedCom interface (under development)
- largely configurable from the admin interface
